Offline supply drives LEDs

April 28, 2011
LEDs need power when rectified ac-mains voltage drops during its cycle. The circuit in Figure 1 lets you use an inductor-less, switching, offline power supply as an LED driver for emergency-exit signs and neon-light replacements.

LED bulbs reveal different design approaches

April 22, 2011
A peek into the Philips LED bulb’s electronics and the 6W, dimmable Pharox 300 contrasts two approaches in how a bulb handles the protection of the LED-power-control electronics.

Nova Scotia converting all highway lighting to LED over the next five years

April 20, 2011
The government of Nova Scotia wants all roadway lighting in the province converted to more energy efficient light-emitting diodes over the next five years.

Two approaches to modeling LEDs: Derive-your-own, and online

April 25, 2011
Device models can be useful tools, and it would be nice to have complete ones readily available for simulating LED circuits. Unfortunately, these are pretty rare due to the complexity of LEDs.

Dimming LEDs: Understanding legacy dimmers

April 13, 2011
Joel Spira invented the solid-state dimmer switch in 1959. There are reportedly at least 150M dimmers currently out in the world, which is doubtless the reason for the EnergyStar requirement that CFL and LED lights going forward  must be compatible with the installed base of dimming switches.

TI, National pairing: A bright idea for LED lighting

April 6, 2011
What might the purchase of National Semiconductor by Texas Instruments mean for the world of LED lighting? IMS Research puts TI and National at #1 and 2, respectively, in the LED IC driver market, with TI accounting for 19% and National for 7% of what IMS terms a $1B market.

E-BOOK: Designing with LED's Workshop | 09-29-2010 | Chicago, IL

EDN's fourth Designing with LEDs event, held in Chicago on September 29, 2010, addressed high-brightness (HB) LED design challenges from the viewpoint of the hardware engineer. In order to broaden the reach of the event and make its content available to those unable to attend, we have published a transcript of the LED manufacturers' panel discussion and six of the technical papers in this e-book.
