The number of electrons available between energy interval E and E+dE is given by

Where, Z(E)dE is the density of states in the energy interval E and E+dE and P(E)is the probability that a state of energy E is occupied. The conduction band does not have all states of the same energy. Let us assume Ec is the energy corresponding to the bottom state of conduction band and Ev is the energy corresponding to the top most state of the valence band as shown in fig. 4
