Preparing to Wire a Home

Wiring a home can be a very complicated job as it spans several rooms and hundreds of feet.  Before you attempt any actual wiring you should ensure that you are wearing ample safety equipment as improper wiring can result in serious injury or even death. You should approach this task with patience as no matter how small the home this type of project will take a significant amount of time and effort to complete properly.   To properly wire a home you will need some specific tools, materials, an in-depth design, and knowledge of electrical codes.

Tools and Materials Required

The tools that are required for home wiring include pliers, wire cutters, drill, tape, strippers, voltage testers, continuity testers, tape measure, screwdrivers, hammer, chisel, square, utility knife, and a hack saw.  Depending on your wiring design and your house structure you may also need to rent a right angled drill that will allow you to drill needed holes you otherwise would be unable to make.  The materials you will need will vary dependi

Adding enough receptacles into your plan is crucial if you want to receive approval from the building inspector.  Overloaded outlets are a major concern for fires, blown fuses and other electrical damage. You should also consider where you want light switches located and what rooms will need more outlets than others to suit your life style.  If you find the actual design of the electrical plan too much to handle you should seek out the help of a knowledgeable friend or even get professional help with the design.

Electrical Codes

Before you attempt to wire a home by yourself you need to have in-depth knowledge of both your local and national electrical codes.  If you require any electrical code information you should visit your local building inspector as they will have the most recent requirements for electrical work.  While you are visiting the building inspector would be an ideal time to apply for a building permit as all electrical work is required to have a building permit.  Doing this type of work properly is of the utmost important as bad wiring can cause fires, electrocution, and death.
